How do you check what ChatGPT says about your business?
Ask the assistants the questions your customers would ask, and ask about your business by name, then write down what they say. Use ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Mode, in a fresh conversation each time. Note whether you are mentioned, whether the details are right, which other businesses are named and which links are shown. Repeat the same questions every month so changes mean something.
Why it is worth 20 minutes
In BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 U.S. adults, the share who said they used ChatGPT and other AI tools for local business recommendations rose from 6% the year before to 45%. If customers are asking, it is worth knowing what they hear.
The questions to ask
- "What is <your business name>?" and "What does <your business name> do?"
- "Who is a good <your service> in <your town>?"
- "Recommend a <your service> for <the kind of customer you serve>."
- The two or three questions customers most often ask you on the phone.
What to write down
- The date, the assistant and the exact question.
- Mentioned or not, and in what position if there is a list.
- Anything wrong: services, area, hours, name, or a mix-up with another business.
- Which other businesses were named, and which links were shown.
What to do with it
Fix anything wrong on your own website, in plain words, so the right details are easy to find. Keep the same questions and run them again next month; one check tells you little, a series tells you which way things are moving. No one can make an assistant say something, so judge progress by being described correctly first, then by being named, then by the inquiries that arrive from AI answers.
