Are AI visibility tracking tools worth it for a small business?

Often not at first. These tools ask AI assistants a fixed list of questions on a schedule and report how often a business is named. That is a sample from the tool's own setup, not what your customers asked or saw, and answers can change from one run to the next. For most small service businesses, a monthly check by hand, plus asking every new inquiry how they found you, usually tells you more without a subscription.

What these tools measure

Most tools sold for this work in a similar way. A list of questions is chosen, such as "who can fix a leaking roof in Tampa", the tool puts them to one or more assistants on a schedule, and it counts how often your business and your competitors are named. Some also record which websites the answers link to and how your business is described.

The result is usually shown as a score, a share of mentions or a trend line built from those runs.

Why the numbers are a sample

The questions are the ones on the tool's list, not the ones your customers typed, and real customers often add details such as their street, their budget or a deadline. Answers also differ by product. Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so "the set of responses and links they show will vary". It also says AI Overviews are shown only when its systems judge them additive to classic search results, and often do not appear at all.

ChatGPT can shape answers around a person's memory and approximate location, as the related answer on why ChatGPT gives different people different answers explains. A run from a tool's account may not match what a customer near you sees.

When a tool can be worth it

  • You serve a wide area or many services, so a check by hand would mean dozens of questions.
  • Several people need the same report every month.
  • You want to follow a trend across several assistants over months, not days.
  • Inquiries that mention an AI answer already arrive, and you want to see whether mentions are rising.

When a check by hand is enough

For a business with a handful of services in one area, a monthly check by hand usually covers it. The related answer on checking what AI says about your business lists the questions to ask and what to write down.

The number that matters most is not in any tool. Ask every new inquiry how they found you and record AI answer as its own channel, as the related answer on telling whether a customer found you through ChatGPT describes.

Questions to ask before you sign up

  • Which questions does it ask, and can you see and change the list?
  • Which assistants does it check, and as if from which location?
  • How many times is each question asked, and does the report show how much the answers vary?
  • Can you read the full answer text, not only a score?
  • Can you export your history if you stop?
