What are Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode?
AI Overviews are short AI-written summaries that Google shows at the top of some search results, with links to learn more. AI Mode is a separate, conversational way to search on Google, built for questions that need more exploration or comparison, and it answers with links to supporting websites. Both put a written answer in front of the customer before the usual list of links.
AI Overviews
Google describes AI Overviews as a way to get to the gist of a complicated topic or question more quickly, with links to explore further. They appear only when Google's systems judge them useful, so many searches do not show one.
AI Mode
Google says AI Mode is particularly helpful for questions that need further exploration, reasoning or complex comparisons, the kind that might once have taken several searches. It gives a fuller AI-written response with links to supporting websites.
What it means for clicks
In a Pew Research Center study of the March 2025 browsing of 900 U.S. adults, users clicked a traditional search result on 8% of visits to results pages that showed an AI summary, against 15% of visits to pages without one. The study shows a link, not proof that the summaries caused the gap.
What it means for a small business
- Being named or linked inside the AI answer matters alongside ranking below it.
- The answer is written, so how your business is described matters, not just whether it appears.
- Fewer clicks can mean fewer visits, so judge results by inquiries and customers, not traffic.
- Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond what it asks of any page in search.
