What is Ask Maps in Google Maps, and what does it mean for a local business?

Ask Maps is a conversational feature in Google Maps, built with Google's Gemini models, that answers detailed questions about places with a written reply and a customized map. Google announced it on March 12, 2026, rolling out in the U.S. and India on Android and iOS. Google says it taps into Maps' information about the world, so a business's Maps listing and the reviews customers leave are likely part of what it can say about that business.

What Google says Ask Maps does

Google's announcement, by Miriam Daniel, VP and GM of Google Maps, describes Ask Maps as a feature that "answers complex, real-world questions a map could never answer before". Its examples include finding somewhere to charge a phone without waiting in a long coffee line, or a public tennis court with lights for tonight. The person taps the Ask Maps button and gets a conversational answer with a customized map of the options.

Google says answers are personalized using things like places the person has searched for or saved in Maps, and that from an answer they can book restaurant reservations, save places to a list, share them with friends and get directions.

What it draws on

Google says Ask Maps taps into Maps' fresh information about the world, and that to build a trip itinerary Maps analyzes information from over 300 million places, including reviews from a community of more than 500 million contributors.

Where a place's details come from in general (the business's own site, licensed data, user contributions and what an owner adds) is covered in the related answer on what a Google Business Profile is; Google's page is about profiles on Search and Maps, not Ask Maps in particular.

Where it works, and when it is wrong

At launch, Google said Ask Maps was rolling out in the U.S. and India on Android and iOS, with desktop coming soon; its help page now gives steps for using it on a computer. The same help page says "AI-powered answers can sometimes be incorrect" and tells people to check important information in more than one place and to follow the links to its sources.

As general advice, if Ask Maps gets your hours or phone number wrong, the fix usually starts with the details you control on your Business Profile; the related answer on what a Google Business Profile is covers what an owner can and cannot change.

What an owner controls, and what no one does

No one can promise that Ask Maps will name a particular business. What an owner can influence is what Maps knows: accurate profile details, and honest reviews from real customers, never paid for or rewarded. The related answer on Google Gemini covers the assistant behind the feature, and the related answer on how customers find businesses through AI assistants covers the wider shift in how people ask.
