What is ChatGPT for business (Business and Enterprise plans)?
ChatGPT for business means the plans OpenAI names for organizations, including ChatGPT Business and ChatGPT Enterprise, where a shared workspace has an owner, admins and members. OpenAI’s guides describe admin controls for roles, plugins and apps, and say availability depends on the plan. One guide states no training on business data by default for ChatGPT Enterprise. Read your own plan’s data terms before customer details go in.
The plan names
OpenAI’s documentation names several kinds of plan. Its admin guides refer to “ChatGPT Business” and “ChatGPT Enterprise” by name, and a dated update note on its documentation overview page, read on 2026-10-31, listed Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans. Those guides also talk about Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces.
What each plan includes can differ. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Work overview says “Availability and controls depend on your plan, workspace configuration, and rollout”.
Shared workspace and admin controls
In plain terms, a workspace is the shared space a company’s people use under one set of admin settings. OpenAI’s roles page says “Built-in workspace roles determine administrative authority”. It describes an Owner role that manages workspace-wide settings, an Admin role that manages supported operations and groups, a Member role without administrative rights, and an Analytics Viewer role that can open workspace analytics. It adds that what is available changes with product and plan updates, and it points readers to OpenAI’s Help Center for the current list.
The ChatGPT Work overview says admins can control plugin and app availability and role access, and that “For Business workspaces, plugins and apps are on by default”. As general advice, whoever owns the plan should read those defaults on the first day rather than assume them.
What it says about data
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Work admin FAQ says ChatGPT Work uses the privacy, security and data commitments of the customer’s ChatGPT workspace. For ChatGPT Enterprise, it says those include “no training on business data by default”. That sentence is about ChatGPT Enterprise. The same page says conversations and eligible files follow their applicable workspace settings.
For any other plan, read OpenAI’s terms and the workspace data settings for that plan before anything private goes in. The related answer on putting customer information into ChatGPT explains what usually stays out.
What a small business might use it for
OpenAI’s documentation home page says ChatGPT Work can turn “a goal, files, and context” into documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Pew Research Center’s February 2026 survey reported that “38% of employed adults report using chatbots for tasks at work”.
A shared workspace usually matters once several people use AI for work and the owner wants one place to set the rules; a business with one user may not need a shared business plan. The related answer on an AI policy for employees covers those rules. As general advice, treat a business plan as a tool for your own team, not as a way to show up in what customers are told. To see that, use the related answer on checking what AI says about your business.
