What is Apple Intelligence, and does Siri use ChatGPT?
Apple Intelligence is Apple’s AI system for iPhone, iPad and Mac, and Apple’s current page presents it together with Siri. When Apple announced it in June 2024, it said Siri can use ChatGPT when helpful and that users are asked before any question is sent. Apple’s pages change with each software release, so check the settings on your own device. No one can promise Siri will name a particular business.
What Apple says it is
Apple’s June 10, 2024 announcement called Apple Intelligence “the personal intelligence system for iPhone, iPad, and Mac”. Apple’s current page is titled “Apple Intelligence and Siri” with a banner reading “Introducing Siri AI”. It describes Siri AI as handling open-ended questions and conversation, searching a person’s personal context, taking actions in apps and drawing on online information. When this page was written, it described Siri AI as a beta in Apple’s newest software.
On privacy, Apple’s page says that through Private Cloud Compute, Apple Intelligence can draw on larger server-based models “without making your data accessible to Apple or anyone else”.
Does Siri use ChatGPT?
Apple’s June 2024 announcement said Siri can use ChatGPT when helpful. It said “Users are asked before any questions are sent to ChatGPT,” including any documents or photos, and that Siri then presents the answer. It said people could use ChatGPT “free without creating an account,” that IP addresses are obscured and that OpenAI will not store requests. For people who connect a ChatGPT account, it said ChatGPT’s data-use policies apply.
That is Apple’s description as of June 2024. Because Apple updates its software and pages, check the settings on your own device to see what is offered now. The related answer on whether Siri and Alexa recommend local businesses covers Apple’s iPhone guide on how a person sets ChatGPT up in Siri.
If customers ask Siri about you
A customer who asks Siri for help may get an answer from Siri itself or, once ChatGPT is set up on their device, from ChatGPT; Apple said in 2024 that users are asked first. That is why a check of what ChatGPT says about you can cover part of it; the related answer on checking what AI says about your business sets out the routine. Ask every new inquiry how they found you, and write down “Siri” when they say so.
If you use Siri yourself for anything involving customer details, remember that Apple said in 2024 that a question may go to ChatGPT after you are asked. The related answer on putting customer information into ChatGPT applies to that too.
