How do customers compare service businesses online before they call?
Before they call, customers usually compare a few businesses on what they can see in minutes: how many reviews each has and how recent they are, whether the owner replies, photos of real work, a plain statement of services and area, and how quickly anyone answers. In BrightLocal's 2026 survey of U.S. adults, 47% said they would not use a business with fewer than 20 reviews.
What they look at
- How many reviews, and how recent: a short or old list can rule a business out before anything else is read.
- Replies to reviews: whether the owner answers, and whether the replies read as written by a person.
- Photos of real work: jobs, vans and people, rather than stock images.
- Clear services and area: whether the business plainly does this job, in this place.
- Response speed: how quickly someone replies once the customer gets in touch.
What the 2026 survey adds
BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, a panel of 1,002 U.S. adults published February 11, 2026, shows how closely people read reviews. Only 9% said they are willing to use a business with five or fewer reviews, and 32% look for reviews written in the last two weeks, up from 20% the year before.
Among the review factors people chose most, 56% picked a review being backed up by other reviews with similar sentiment, 44% a review posted within the last month, 37% the owner having responded, and 36% an appealing photo or video accompanying the review.
On replies, 89% expect business owners to respond to reviews, and 50% said templated or generic responses make them unlikely to choose a business. The related answers on why reviews matter and how to get more reviews the right way cover asking and replying.
Reviews send people to your website
Reviews are often not the last step. In the same survey, 66% said they do more research after reading a positive review, against 34% who go on to buy or book, and 54% said they visit the business's website. That is where a clear list of services, the area you cover and photos of real work can do their job; the related answer on making a website trustworthy covers what to put there.
Speed is part of the comparison
A customer who contacts two or three businesses at once will often book with the first one that answers clearly. A prompt reply that says when a quote or visit can happen can win the job even against a business with more reviews. The related answer on how fast to reply to a new lead covers why.
See yourself as a customer would
- Look up your service and town, and look at your business next to two or three others, as a stranger would.
- Count the reviews you received in the last few months, and reply to any that have no reply.
- Check that your website says what you do and where, and shows real work.
- Send your own business an inquiry and time the reply.
