Can a brand-new business show up in AI answers?

It can, but usually not in the first weeks, and no one can give you a date. An assistant can only describe what it can find, and a new business often leaves a thin trail: a young website, few reviews, few mentions elsewhere. Google says its AI features have no extra requirements beyond normal search. So the first months are for what you control: a clear website, a verified Google profile, real reviews from every customer and a name no one confuses.

Why the first months are slow

Assistants answer from what they can find when they search, or from what their models learned earlier, and a business that opened recently often has little of either. Google's own AI features in Search have no special requirements beyond ordinary search, as the related answer on getting mentioned in Google AI Overviews explains.

For local results, a new business also starts with few reviews, which can be one reason it appears less at first; the related answer on why a competitor shows up above you on Google Maps covers how Google weighs that.

What a new owner controls

  • A website that says plainly what you do, where, and for whom, with a phone number and a way to reach you.
  • A Google Business Profile, set up and verified. The related answer on when a new business should start marketing covers what Google allows before opening day.
  • Your first real reviews: ask every customer once the job is done, and offer nothing in return.
  • A distinct name. A name close to an established business, or a generic phrase, can make it harder for an assistant to tell you apart.
  • A record of where each inquiry came from, so you can see when AI answers start sending people.

What to expect, and when to check

Timing is hard to predict, and it differs by assistant; the related answer on how long it takes to show up in AI answers explains why. Being described correctly when someone asks about you by name often comes before being suggested to someone who asks for a service in your area.

A reasonable habit is to ask a few assistants about your business every month or two and note what changes. The related answer on getting ChatGPT to recommend your business covers what to work on next.

Be wary of shortcuts

A new owner is an easy target for offers to place a business inside AI answers fast. No one can promise that an assistant will recommend a particular business, and the related answer on paying to show up in AI answers covers what is actually for sale. If you are starting late rather than new, the related answer on whether it is too late to start SEO covers that case.
