How long does it take to show up in AI answers?

Usually months rather than weeks, and no one can give you a date. Timing depends on the assistant: one that searches the web while it answers can reflect changes once it finds them, while an answer drawn from what a model learned earlier may not change until a newer model is released. Early progress tends to be small: a more accurate description first, then an occasional mention, before inquiries follow.

Why the timing differs by assistant

Some answers are written from a live web search done at the moment of the question. Others lean on what a model learned from older material when it was built. OpenAI says ChatGPT "may search the web automatically when your question would benefit from current information". When it does, a page as it reads today can be found by that search, while an answer drawn only from older training material may not reflect a recent change at all.

Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on pages that can appear in regular Google search, with no additional requirements. So a page has to be findable in ordinary search before an AI feature can show it, and Google gives no date for either.

What early progress usually looks like

  • Assistants describe your business more accurately: the right services, the right area.
  • You get named for a narrow question, such as a specific service in your town, before a broad one.
  • You are named some of the time, not every time the question is asked.
  • A new customer says they asked an AI and your name came up.

Why no one can give you a date

OpenAI says only that "Placement is not guaranteed". Google says that meeting all of its requirements still does not guarantee being shown. The same question can also get a different answer from one day to the next. A promised date, or a promise that a particular assistant will name you, is usually a warning sign; the related answer on spotting an SEO scam covers what else to watch for.

How it compares with SEO

The related answer on how long SEO takes sets out the same months-not-weeks pattern for search results. The two often move together. Google says its AI features ask nothing extra beyond regular search; as general advice, groundwork that helps one can help the other. The way to know is to keep checking what assistants say and to note every inquiry that came from an AI answer.
