Is advertising on Yelp worth it for a service business?

It can be, if your customers already look for your kind of service on Yelp and you judge it by jobs won rather than clicks. Yelp Ads charge per click, and Yelp's advertising terms count requests for information or quotes as clicks too, so a click is not a customer. Yelp says paying does not change which reviews it recommends. Prefer a plan you can stop at any time, record every Yelp inquiry with its outcome, and decide after a few months.

What you pay for

Yelp's help article on its cost-per-click program says that each time your ad is clicked, you are charged your cost-per-click price, which varies with supply and demand at that moment: how many businesses like yours compete for the same clicks, available ad inventory and consumer interest. It says Yelp will never charge more than the monthly budget you set.

Yelp's Master Advertising Terms (last updated May 11, 2026) define a click broadly: each instance, "at Yelp’s sole discretion", that a user acts on or in connection with an ad, such as tapping it or requesting information, quotes, services, reservations or appointments. The related answer on cost per click, impressions and reach explains why a click is not a customer.

Yelp's support article on its ads says they appear in a variety of places on Yelp, including search result pages and competitors' pages.

Does paying change your reviews?

Yelp says no. Its support article on advertisers says its recommendation software treats reviews for advertisers and non-advertisers "exactly the same". Its advertising terms add that buying ads will not influence that software or let a business alter reviews. Who it tends to suit

As general advice, Yelp ads usually make the most sense when your customers already look for your kind of job on Yelp. Ask every new customer how they found you for a month or two; if Yelp rarely comes up, an ad there may have few people to reach.

Start with the free page, kept claimed, accurate and answered. Yelp's article "How to cancel your Yelp Ads and other paid products" says canceling Yelp Ads does not remove your business from Yelp, and customers may still find your page and contact you.

Questions to ask before you sign

  • Is this a self-serve plan or a contract? Yelp's help article on canceling says a non-term contract program can be stopped at any time, while a business in a contract is told to call Yelp's Customer Success team to cancel.
  • Is there a commitment period or an early termination fee? Yelp's advertising terms say an order can include a commitment period, and that ending it early may carry an early termination fee if the order says so.
  • Does it renew, and how do you end it? The terms say an order set to renew automatically continues month to month until you give notice, and an order with no termination process of its own ends 30 days after written notice by email to Yelp's Customer Success team.
  • What else is in the package? Yelp's article on canceling Yelp Ads and other paid products says cost-per-click ad packages and page upgrades are bought individually, so each one has to be canceled on its own.

Judge it by jobs won

Tag every inquiry from a Yelp ad with the channel paid and Yelp's name in the notes (an inquiry from the free Yelp page counts as search), and follow each one to won, lost or still open, as the related answer on setting up a simple lead tracker describes. Call or text someone back only with the person's consent. After a few months, compare what the ads cost with the jobs they brought. Red flags for any paid listing are in the related answer on whether paid directory listings are worth it.
