What is white-label SEO, and does it matter if your agency outsources the work?
White-label SEO is work one company does that another company sells under its own name, so the agency you hire may pass some or all of the job to a provider you never meet. That is not wrong in itself; agencies often use specialists. It matters when you cannot see who does the work, what they change in your name, or who holds your logins. Google says "you are responsible for the actions of any companies you hire".
How it usually works
A provider does some of the work, such as writing pages, fixing the site or building the monthly report. The agency sells it under its own brand, sets the price and stays your contact. Reports often carry the agency's logo even when someone else produced them. Resellers and small agencies often work this way to offer more than they can do in-house.
When it matters
- No one will tell you who works on your site.
- Changes appear on the site that nobody explains.
- Your logins are passed along a chain of companies instead of each person having their own access.
- Your customer or lead data goes to a company your contract does not name.
- The report reads like a template, with little about your business or your inquiries.
What Google says to watch for
Google's guide "Do you need an SEO?" says to be careful "if a company is secretive or won't clearly explain what they intend to do". It warns that if an SEO creates deceptive or misleading content on your behalf, your site could be removed from Google Search entirely, and that "you are responsible for the actions of any companies you hire". Questions to ask
- Who will do the work on my site: your staff, or another company?
- Which parts, if any, go to a provider, and will you tell me if that changes?
- Will that provider log in to my accounts, and with its own login added by me?
- Who sees my customer and lead data, and is that in the contract?
- Can I see a dated list of every change, whoever made it?
What a fair answer looks like
A fair agency names any partner, keeps you the owner of every account with each helper on its own login, and takes responsibility for the work either way.
