Can you add your business to ChatGPT?
Not in the way you add a business to a map. OpenAI's "Build for ChatGPT" page for developers lists plugins, workspace agents, a shopping connection for merchants and ads. None is described there as a way to be placed in ChatGPT's written answers. A quote-request button for local businesses exists, but only as a beta with approved partners. Whether ChatGPT names you still depends on what it can find about your business.
What OpenAI's developer pages list
| What OpenAI describes | Who it is for | |
|---|---|---|
| Plugins | Packages people discover, install and share in ChatGPT and Codex | Developers whose plugin is approved after review; publishing under a company name needs business verification |
| Product feeds | A merchant's product catalog, shared for ChatGPT's shopping experiences | Approved partners only, for now |
| Get Quote (beta) | A quote-request button on a local business's card in ChatGPT | Approved partners taking part in a beta test |
| Ads | Ads in ChatGPT, managed through OpenAI's Ads API | Advertisers |
What each one is, and is not
As we read these pages, each option in the table is a tool a customer chooses to install, a way to sell products, a quote button run by a partner, or an ad. None is a listing a business can buy or fill in to make ChatGPT recommend it when someone asks who to hire. OpenAI does say it uses the partners' business records for search, but in the beta only approved partners supply them. The related answer on whether you can pay to show up in AI answers covers what OpenAI says about ads and answers.
OpenAI's commerce guide says onboarding product feeds "is currently available to approved partners", and both that guide and the quote guide send applicants to the same merchants form.
The quote-request beta for local services
OpenAI's developer guide describes a Get Quote button that can appear on a local business's card or sidebar in ChatGPT. Selecting it opens the partner's quote-request window inside ChatGPT. OpenAI says the feature is "currently in beta and being tested with approved partners", and that the button shows only when the business has an eligible provider with a configured partner plugin. The partner supplies the business records, including name, address, phone number and website.
As general advice: if a quote platform you already use says it takes part, ask what it sends about your business, where the requests go, and how you will know that a request started in ChatGPT.
What decides whether ChatGPT names you
No form controls that. The related answer on how to get ChatGPT to recommend your business covers what an owner can influence, the related answer on where ChatGPT gets its information explains what it draws on, and the related answer on how customers find businesses through AI assistants shows what the customer sees.
If someone offers to add you
- Ask which OpenAI program it is, and for the OpenAI page that describes it.
- A plugin is something a customer chooses to install; it is not a place in the answer.
- Treat any promise that ChatGPT will recommend you as a warning sign: no business or seller controls what it writes.
