Why are my competitors showing up on Google instead of me?
Usually because Google judges their page a closer fit for what the customer typed, or the business behind it looks better established. Most of the visible differences take about twenty minutes to find: search the way customers do, then compare their page, reviews and profile with yours. Some gaps can close in a quarter; others, such as a long history of reviews, take longer. No outsider can see exactly how Google weighs any of it.
Search the way your customers do
Search five ways a customer would: the service and your town, the service and "near me", one specific job, a problem in the customer's own words, and the kind of customer you serve. Note which businesses come up above you more than once. Those are the ones to compare, rather than the competitor you happen to know.
Compare their page with yours
Open their page and yours side by side and work down the table.
| What to compare | Where to look | Can you change it this quarter? |
|---|---|---|
| Does the page say the service, the town and who it is for, in plain words, near the top? | Their page and yours | Yes |
| A page for each main service, or one long list | The site's menu | Yes |
| How many reviews, how recent, and whether they mention the job | Both Business Profiles | The recent ones, yes; a decade of them, no |
| A complete profile: hours, photos, replies to reviews | The map results | Yes |
| A longer history, which often brings more reviews and mentions | Their about page or profile | Not the years; the reviews and mentions they bring, over time |
What Google says it rewards
Google says its ranking systems are designed to prioritize "helpful, reliable information that's created to benefit people". One of the questions it suggests asking of your own pages is whether they provide "substantial value when compared to other pages in search results". It also suggests getting an honest view from people you trust who are not connected to your site. As general advice, a friend who has seen neither site is often a quick judge of which page tells a customer more.
What no outsider can see
No one outside Google can see exactly how it weighs these things for a given search. Google's guide to how Search works says relevance is determined by hundreds of factors, and its page on hiring an SEO says third-party SEO tools "don't have access to Google's internal ranking data". So be wary of anyone who claims to know the exact reason a competitor ranks, or promises to put you above them. Close the gaps you can see, then run the same five searches again in a few months.
Maps, AI answers and not showing up at all
This check is for the ordinary results. The map results work somewhat differently, as the related answer on why a competitor shows up above you on Google Maps explains. If ChatGPT names a competitor and not you, see the related answer on why ChatGPT recommends a competitor. And if you do not appear at all, start with the related answer on why a business is not showing up on Google.
