Why can't you reply to a Google review?
Usually the profile or the account is the reason, not the review. Google says you must verify the business before you can reply, and you need to be signed in to a Google Account that owns or manages the profile. A reply that does not appear may still be in Google's check, which usually takes up to 10 minutes and sometimes up to 30 days. A review Google removed for breaking its policies is not restored.
Check the account first
Google's page on managing reviews says: "Before you can reply to reviews, you must verify your business". Its verification page adds that to find your profile, you must sign in to the Google Account associated with it. So a missing Reply button often means the profile was never verified, or that you are signed in to a personal account rather than the one that manages the business.
Google's page on owners and managers says both roles can respond to reviews. If someone else holds the profile, such as a former employee or an agency, ask them to add you as an owner or to hand ownership back; the related answer on what to do if someone else controls your Google Business Profile covers that. The related answers on verifying a Google Business Profile and on giving someone access to it cover both steps.
Other reasons, side by side
| What you see | Google's explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Your reply does not appear yet | Replies are checked first, usually within 10 minutes, sometimes up to 30 days | Give it time before writing a new one |
| Google asks you to edit your reply | It was not approved under Google's content policies | Remove what breaks the policy and post it again |
| The review has disappeared | Reviews can be delayed a few days while checked; ones removed for policy violations are not restored | See the related answer on missing Google reviews |
| The review shows another website's name | Profiles may show reviews from other sites; Google says to contact that site about them | Reply on that site, if it allows replies |
| No reviews show on the profile | Reviews are offered only in certain countries, regions and business categories, and Google may pause them for some profiles | Check the profile's email for a notice from Google |
When the profile itself has a problem
Google can also restrict a profile whose owner broke its fake engagement policy, for a set period and with an email first; a suspended profile is a separate case with its own appeal. The related answers on why Google reviews go missing and on why a Google Business Profile gets suspended cover both.
Once the Reply button works
What to write, especially to an unhappy customer, is covered in the related answer on responding to a negative Google review. As general advice, if the profile is verified, you are signed in as an owner or manager and the review is visible, yet there is still no way to reply, contact Google's Business Profile support rather than creating a second profile.
