What does 'direct' traffic mean in your website analytics?

In Google Analytics, direct traffic is the channel for visits that arrive by a saved link or by someone entering your address. Visits can land there for other reasons too, such as a link opened from some apps or email programs, or a customer who heard your name from a person or an AI answer and then typed it. It counts visits, not who became a customer, so your lead records tell you more.

What Google says direct means

Google Analytics sorts website visits into default channels, such as Email, Display and AI Assistant. Its help page defines Direct as the channel for users who arrive "via a saved link or by entering your URL". The rule behind it is a source of "(direct)" with a medium of "(not set)" or "(none)". The page also says default channel groups cannot be edited in Google Analytics.

The same page lists an AI Assistant channel for visits that arrive from sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot or Grok, and says it excludes Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode.

What can land in direct

  • Someone who typed your address, or used a saved link. This is what Google's definition describes.
  • Your own team opening the site, which can add to the count.
  • A customer who heard your name from a neighbor, a truck, a flyer or the radio and typed the address later.
  • A customer who read your name in an AI answer, then typed the address. A person who only read your name never arrives from the assistant, so nothing marks the visit. The related answer on telling whether a customer found you through ChatGPT explains why.
  • As general advice, not Google's: a link opened from some apps, documents or email programs can carry no sign of where the click came from, so the visit can look like a typed address.

Why a direct number says little about your customers

A large direct number can feel like proof that people know your name. It might be. It might also be visits that nothing labeled. What analytics can and cannot tell you is in the related answer on whether a small business needs website analytics.

The word also means something different in your own lead records. In Google's report, direct is a label a rule gives to a visit. In a lead record, direct is one of eight channels, for a customer who typed your address or came back on their own, and a returning customer counts as direct.

What to do instead

  • Ask every new inquiry how they found you, on the form, on the call or in your first reply. The related answer on the options to offer for "How did you hear about us?" has a ready list.
  • Record the channel as search, AI answer, social, referral, paid, email, campaign or direct, and later the outcome: won, lost or still open.
  • Read analytics direct as 'not labeled', not as 'loyal', and watch it as a trend over months beside your lead counts.
  • Links you share yourself, such as the ones in your emails, can be marked so analytics can name where they came from. An unmarked one often cannot be traced.
