Should a business use a TikTok business account or a personal or creator account?

Usually a Verified Business Account. TikTok's help page on account types says anyone whose primary goal on TikTok is to promote a business, whether a product or a service, should use one. It adds business tools such as a Business Suite with a leads manager and contact details on the profile, but limits music to TikTok's Commercial Music Library, without the general music library. On TikTok, personal and creator use both fall under a General TikTok Account.

The account types TikTok lists

TikTok's help page "Account types on TikTok" lists General TikTok Accounts (also called Personal Accounts), Verified Business Accounts and Organization Accounts. It says General accounts are a good choice for general users, content creators and most public figures, and that they come with creator tools.

It describes Organization Accounts as profiles several team members can use, with administrators who can revoke a person's access. It says they are not available everywhere and can only be created from certain business platforms, such as the TikTok Shop Seller Center.

What a Verified Business Account adds

  • A Business Suite with an analytics dashboard and a leads manager. TikTok says the Business Suite needs a Verified Business Account or a TikTok Account with Advanced Access; General accounts get analytics in TikTok Studio.
  • A website link on the profile. The same page says General accounts need at least 1,000 followers to post one.
  • Business details on the public profile. TikTok says only a Verified Business Account can show a business address, email or phone number there.

What it gives up: the music

TikTok says Verified Business Accounts do not have access to its general music library, because those songs are not cleared for commercial use and are restricted to personal entertainment; they use the Commercial Music Library, which TikTok describes as pre-cleared for commercial use. Its Business Help Center article on that library says businesses cannot use the general library for commercial use, that the commercial library is free for businesses to use, and that it should be used for organic posts, ads and branded content.

For most service businesses, that trade is small: the clips that bring inquiries are usually the work itself, not the soundtrack. The related answer on using music in business videos covers the other platforms.

Switching, and keeping personal posts apart

TikTok's page says you change account type in the app under Settings and privacy, then Account, then Business verification. It advises against switching back and forth, because your verification is not saved, and recommends two separate accounts if you want to promote your business and also post personal content. It also says TikTok may ask you to verify the business to keep the business features, and that an account that is not verified may be converted to a General account.

Who holds the login

Set the account up with an email address the business controls, and keep a second person able to get in, as the related answer on who should own your ad accounts explains. Whether to be on TikTok at all is covered by the related answer on which social media a service business should use. Either way, record each inquiry from TikTok with social as its channel, or paid if it came from an ad, and follow it to won, lost or still open.
