Should you let Meta's AI assistant or an auto-reply answer your Facebook and Instagram messages?
A simple auto-reply is usually worth turning on: Meta's Inbox can send an instant reply to a first message, an away message, and answers about your hours, location and contact details. An AI agent that writes its own answers is a bigger step. On WhatsApp, Meta says its business AI can give pricing details and recommend services, and warns its messages may not be accurate. Whichever you use, each real inquiry still belongs in your lead list, tagged social (or paid, if it came from an ad).
What Meta's auto-replies do
Meta's help page on Inbox automations says they work for Facebook Pages, Instagram business accounts and WhatsApp Business accounts connected to Meta Business Suite. Its templates include an instant reply to someone's first message, an away message for when you are not available, frequently asked questions, and replies about your location, contact information and hours.
Custom keyword replies, available on Meta Business Suite desktop, answer messages that contain up to 5 chosen words or phrases. Meta says keywords are case-sensitive and must match exactly, and a keyword reply goes out after 15 minutes unless you respond first. It also notes that turning on Meta Business Agent pauses existing automations such as away messages and instant replies.
What Meta's business AI does
WhatsApp's help center describes Meta Business Agent as "an artificial intelligence (AI) service from Meta for businesses", available in limited countries to select businesses. On WhatsApp, it can answer questions about hours, location, products and services, recommend them, give pricing details, and answer questions about discounts and payment, using your catalog, public profiles, website and business description.
The same page says AI-generated messages "may not be accurate or appropriate", and that messages in chats where it is connected are still collected to improve AI at Meta, even when you mute it.
Where each helps and where it can hurt
The trade-offs are the same as for a chatbot on your website, covered in the related answer on chatbots: fixed answers help after hours, and anything that can state a wrong price or never hand off to a person hurts. The Meta-specific point is that its business AI writes its own answers in your name, and Meta warns those answers may not be accurate.
Every message is still a lead
An automatic reply is not follow-up. Copy each real inquiry into your lead list with the channel social (or paid, if it came from an ad) and the platform named, as the related answer on tracking leads from social media messages describes, and work it to won, lost or still open. Move a conversation to a text or call only with the person's consent. The related answer on what parts of lead generation you can automate covers which steps to automate and which to keep human.
