Can you move a website built on Wix or Squarespace to another company?
Usually not as a working site. Wix says a Wix site must run on Wix's servers, and Squarespace exports only some content, in a file made for WordPress. What can move is the domain, which both let you transfer to another provider, your contact list, which both let you export, and copies of your own words and photos, which you can save yourself. Treat a switch as a rebuild somewhere else, and keep the old site live until the new one works.
What Wix says
Wix's help article on exporting a site says that for a Wix site to work properly, it "needs to be hosted and operated on Wix's servers". It adds that the content you build on Wix belongs to you, and that you can keep a domain with another provider and connect it to your Wix site.
Wix's domain article says a domain bought from Wix can be transferred to another domain host, that your Wix site is then disconnected, and that a transfer usually takes up to 7 days. It also says business email on that domain will not work after the transfer until its email settings are added again. Separately, Wix says the site owner can export the site's contacts to a CSV file, which it describes as a way to copy them to a different platform.
What Squarespace says
Squarespace says you can export certain content to an .xml file, which can only be in a WordPress format, and that some content does not export because many features depend on its platform. Its list of what exports includes layout pages, one blog page with its posts, and text and image blocks. What does not export includes store and portfolio pages, product and video blocks, drafts, style settings and every blog page but one.
Its import and export guide adds that contacts and products can be exported to .csv files, and that images and uploaded videos cannot be exported in bulk, though you can download images one at a time. Its domain guide says a domain without an active lock can be transferred to another provider, that this can take up to 15 days, and that it does not move your site's hosting or cancel your Squarespace site.
Planning a switch without losing inquiries
As general advice, not either company's:
- Save everything first: the text of every page, your photos, and your contact list exported to a file.
- Build and test the new site before you move anything. Keep the old site live, and its plan paid, until the new one works.
- Move the domain last, and plan for email if your business email runs on that domain.
- On the day you switch, send a test inquiry through every form and call the number on the new site.
- For the next few weeks, watch your inquiries by source, so a drop shows up quickly.
Before you switch at all
If the site works but is unclear or slow, improving it where it is can be quicker than moving; the related answer on whether to upgrade or rebuild explains how to tell. If you are choosing a platform now, the related answer on how to choose a website platform says to pick one you can leave.

Websites, upgraded or built
Most businesses do not need a new website. They need the one they have to load fast, say clearly what they do and ask the visitor to take one step.
