What is the difference between branding, marketing and advertising?

Branding is what people think and feel about your business, and the name, look, voice and service that shape it. Marketing is everything that helps customers find you and choose you, from your website and reviews to referrals and follow-up. Advertising is the paid part of marketing, where you pay for space or attention. For a small service business, branding supports the other two, but it is rarely a source of leads by itself.

Where a name and logo fit

A name and a logo are part of the brand, not the whole of it. Customers of a service business often remember how the job went, how fast you replied and how you left their home more than your colors. The related answer on whether you need a logo before a website covers timing.

Why a branding project is not a lead source

A new logo or a refreshed look can make a business seem more established, but it rarely brings inquiries on its own: people still have to find you and get in touch. As general advice, if inquiries are the problem, fix the marketing first (being found, replying fast, following up), and refresh the brand when it is holding back a business that people already find.

Advertising is one tool, not the plan

Advertising can start quickly and usually stops working when the spending stops, so it often suits a busy season, a new service or a new area. The unpaid parts of marketing, such as reviews, referrals and being found in search, usually take longer and keep working. Many small businesses use both, and the related answer on inbound or outbound marketing compares them.
